Caribou Hunts In Canada

A perfect week hunting for caribou at Munroe Lake Lodge begins with a scenic flight from Thompson to the Main Lodge, followed by a flight to Caribou Camp. Upon arrival, you'll be greeted by the friendly staff and settled into your comfortable accommodations, surrounded by the stunning wilderness of Manitoba, Canada.

We offer a world-class experience for hunters who want to hunt Barren-ground Caribou. Here’s what sets us apart:

  • Location: We’re located in Northern Manitoba,  about 8 km (5 miles) south of the Nunavut border on the shores of Farnie Lake. This is one of the best places on the planet to hunt for Barren-ground Caribou. Almost no hunting has taken place here—it’s a secluded spot filled with incredible wildlife.

  • Facilities: There’s no rule that says you can’t be comfortable while caribou hunting. Our camp offers three delicious meals a day cooked with local fare (that we’ve fished and hunted ourselves). Warm beds, hot water, starlink wifi internet, rustic lodgings—what more could you need?

  • Experience: Our guides have been Caribou hunting for years, and we’ve helped hunters like you bag more Caribou than we can count. Hunting a bull Caribou is an experience you’ll never forget. We process the Caribou for you in our butchering tent, separating and tagging meat, rack, and cape.

Why Book a Caribou Hunting Trip With Us?

You’ll be travelling on water and on land to find your quarry. To ensure the best possible experience for everyone involved, we hunt in groups of three—one guide and two hunters. Visit us, and experience one of the greatest Caribou hunts in Canada.

Where Our Caribou Hunts Are Conducted

Caribou hunting takes place in the barren lands and on the shores, islands, and forests of Farnie Lake. We’re far south enough from the Arctic Circle that we don’t get perpetual daylight or darkness—there’s plenty of time to go hunting and plenty of time to rest up for the next day.

Our hunts will take you along rivers, streams, and ponds and through sparse stands of trees, as we use spot and stalk techniques to find and predict the movement of Caribou herds.

The hunting season varies slightly, but Manitoba Caribou hunts are generally allowed from until the last week of August to early October. This is peak rutting season—bulls’ antlers are at their peak around this time of year.

Things To Know About Caribou

There are so many interesting Caribou facts that are valuable for hunters to know. While we can’t cover them all, here are a few of the most important:

  • Both male and female Barren-ground Caribou grow antlers

  • Male Caribou’s antlers are at their largest in the rutting season

  • Caribou migrate for thousands of kilometres—understanding their migration patterns helps our guides plan the hunt

  • Weather conditions have a significant impact on the behaviour of Barren-ground Caribou—they tend to move less in inclement weather

  • Caribou can attract predators like Wolves and Bears

By understanding caribou behaviour, you’ll increase your chances of success during the hunt. Don’t be afraid to ask your guide any questions during your stay at our lodge.

Other Animals You Can Encounter

Munroe Lake is a wildlife lover’s paradise. Aside from Barren-ground Caribou, you can expect to see a number of different species on your caribou hunting expedition. They include:

Mammals

  • Arctic and Red Foxes

  • Snowshoe and Arctic Hare

  • Black Bears

  • Grey Wolves

  • Wolverines

  • Canada Lynx

Very rarely, hunters may even see Polar Bears—we’re far enough north to be in their range but far enough from Hudson’s Bay that they’re an extremely rare sight.

Birds

  • Rock and Willow Ptarmigan

  • Snowy Owls

  • Waterfowl (Ducks, Geese, etc.)

Fish

  • Arctic Grayling

  • Lake Trout

  • Northern Pike

Hunting & Fishing Opportunities

You’re here to hunt for Caribou—but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of other hunting and fishing opportunities during your stay with us. The Trout and Pike fishing in the area is unparalleled. We also highly recommend hunting for Ptarmigan during your stay with us as a bit of recreation between Caribou hunts. There’s something to enjoy for hunters of all stripes!

About the Site

Our site is on the seldom travelled grounds around. The fact that this area has never been extensively hunted makes it one of the best places for Caribou hunting in Canada.

We think you’ll agree: Our caribou hunting packages offer the ultimate hunt for anyone interested in hunting Caribou. Couple that with all of the other hunting opportunities in the area, and it’s easy to see why we chose Munroe Lake as the site for our lodge.

Travelling to the Lodge

We’re in the wilderness deep in Northern Manitoba. That makes us a unique and desirable destination for Manitoba Caribou hunts—but it does present some challenges for hunters looking to make their way to our lodge.

Fortunately, we’ve made travel as easy as possible.

  1. Out-of-province visitors should travel to Winnipeg, Manitoba’s capital city. If you’re flying in, you’ll land at the James Armstrong Richardson International Airport (YWG).

  2. From Winnipeg, you can drive or fly to Thompson. The drive is about 7 hours; flying to Thompson is possible through airlines like Calm Air.

  3. We’ll pick you up from Thompson airport, and fly you out to our lodge!

Safety

This particular Caribou hunt is deep in the rugged wilderness of Manitoba—experienced hunters will get the most out of the trip. Here’s a refresher on what you can do to stay safe:

  • Dress in layers: On average, the temperature in our area peaks at about 10°C (50°F), and it can get much colder from there. Dressing in layers, with a jacket, sweater, and t-shirt is best. Bring mitts or gloves to keep your hands warm. And don’t forget your high visibility orange vest and cap!

  • Bring the right gear: We’ve created a list of all the hunting gear we recommend you bring. Read up on it—it will be helpful for planning your trip.

  • Listen to your guide: There are predators, natural hazards, and other dangers lurking in this untamed wilderness. Follow your guide’s instructions.

  • Learn first aid: You never know when a situation could go south. Learning first aid could save a life.

  • Respect the wildlife: Take clean, humane shots. Don’t attract unwanted attention; follow your guide’s instructions, and don’t bother animals unnecessarily.

  • Know your limits: Don’t push yourself too hard. Let your guide know if you’re feeling tired and need a break.
