Location: We’re located in Northern Manitoba, about 8 km (5 miles) south of the Nunavut border on the shores of Farnie Lake. This is one of the best places on the planet to hunt for Barren-ground Caribou. Almost no hunting has taken place here—it’s a secluded spot filled with incredible wildlife.
Facilities: There’s no rule that says you can’t be comfortable while caribou hunting. Our camp offers three delicious meals a day cooked with local fare (that we’ve fished and hunted ourselves). Warm beds, hot water, starlink wifi internet, rustic lodgings—what more could you need?

Where Our Caribou Hunts Are Conducted

Caribou hunting takes place in the barren lands and on the shores, islands, and forests of Farnie Lake. We’re far south enough from the Arctic Circle that we don’t get perpetual daylight or darkness—there’s plenty of time to go hunting and plenty of time to rest up for the next day.

Our hunts will take you along rivers, streams, and ponds and through sparse stands of trees, as we use spot and stalk techniques to find and predict the movement of Caribou herds.

The hunting season varies slightly, but Manitoba Caribou hunts are generally allowed from until the last week of August to early October. This is peak rutting season—bulls’ antlers are at their peak around this time of year.

Things To Know About Caribou

There are so many interesting Caribou facts that are valuable for hunters to know. While we can’t cover them all, here are a few of the most important:

We also highly recommend hunting for Ptarmigan during your stay with us as a bit of recreation between Caribou hunts. There’s something to enjoy for hunters of all stripes!

About the Site

Our site is on the seldom travelled grounds around. The fact that this area has never been extensively hunted makes it one of the best places for Caribou hunting in Canada.

Travelling to the Lodge

We’re in the wilderness deep in Northern Manitoba. That makes us a unique and desirable destination for Manitoba Caribou hunts—but it does present some challenges for hunters looking to make their way to our lodge.

Fortunately, we’ve made travel as easy as possible.

Out-of-province visitors should travel to Winnipeg, Manitoba’s capital city. If you’re flying in, you’ll land at the James Armstrong Richardson International Airport (YWG).
From Winnipeg, you can drive or fly to Thompson. The drive is about 7 hours; flying to Thompson is possible through airlines like Calm Air.
We’ll pick you up from Thompson airport,and fly you out to our lodge!

Safety

This particular Caribou hunt is deep in the rugged wilderness of Manitoba—experienced hunters will get the most out of the trip. Here’s a refresher on what you can do to stay safe:

Dress in layers: On average, the temperature in our area peaks at about 10°C (50°F), and it can get much colder from there. Dressing in layers, with a jacket, sweater, and t-shirt is best. Bring mitts or gloves to keep your hands warm. And don’t forget your high visibility orange vest and cap!
Bring the right gear: We’ve created a list of all the hunting gear we recommend you bring. Read up on it—it will be helpful for planning your trip.
Listen to your guide: There are predators, natural hazards, and other dangers lurking in this untamed wilderness. Follow your guide’s instructions.
Learn first aid: You never know when a situation could go south. Learning first aid could save a life.
Respect the wildlife: Take clean, humane shots. Don’t attract unwanted attention; follow your guide’s instructions, and don’t bother animals unnecessarily.
Know your limits: Don’t push yourself too hard. Let your guide know if you’re feeling tired and need a break.

Typical Day Itinerary

Typical caribou hunt

Day 1

7:00 am
- Departure from Thompson to Munroe Lake Lodge on a wheeled 9 seater Cessna Caravan.
- Arrival on Munroe Lake Lodge's 3300 foot airstrip, greeted by our Lodge Manager.
  Your gear will be brought down to the dock and loaded on the floatplane.
- The floatplane brings you to the caribou camp where the guides and staff greet you and get you set up for the first day.
- We sight you in at app. 100 yards; fill out the necessary paperwork, grab a bite or a lunch and you are hunting before noon.

Regular day schedule (Days 2-6)

7:00 A.M.
- Breakfast is served. Every morning is a simple, hearty, different breakfast to get fuelled up for your day.
- As soon as you are done with breakfast and lunches are made, you and your guide, either by boat or on foot, are on the tundra looking for that big trophy bull.
6:00 P.M.
- Supper is served. We often add local treats such as caribou or lake trout.
- Hunters coming in early or looking for a little break often go fishing. Trophy Lake Trout and Northern Pike are taken within minutes to camp in the past.
- As the sun sets, the northern lights come out, giving you a display you will not soon forget, hunters retire for the night for a comfortable, well-deserved rest.
- The guides work hard processing your animal in the butchering tent and carefully tag your meat, rack, and cape to make sure your trip home in uneventful.

Last Day

Morning departure on the floatplane back to Munroe Lake Lodge.
At Munroe we transfer all your baggage, meat, and large racks to the Cessna Caravan on the airstrip.
The Caravan brings you to Thompson, but because of varying fall weather we recommend you make your travel arrangements from Thompson as late in the day as possible.

Moose only or Moose/Caribou Combo

4 hunters per year, 9 day hunt

- We will be moose hunting in an area of Manitoba, Canada that has rarely been hunted and is exclusive only to Munroe Lake Lodge. This is prime moose country with lots of marshy areas and numerous rivers and feeder creeks.
- This nine day moose hunt is done from Munroe Lake Lodge
- We offer a one guide per two hunters package.
- We hunt the peak of the rut, luring big moose bulls by calling, both early morning and evening. Having a 1,000 pound Bull Moose answer your call will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up and will not soon be forgotten.
- Munroe Lake Lodge accommodates only 4 lucky hunters per year. Inquire early!
