Northern pike are one of the most exciting freshwater fish in North America, and for good reason. They're aggressive, explosive, and built like aquatic missiles. Landing a trophy-sized pike is a rush that stays with you long after you leave the water. At Munroe Lake Lodge, our guests experience some of the finest pike fishing Manitoba has to offer — and it all starts with where we are.
Why Munroe Lake Produces Trophy Pike
Munroe Lake sits deep in the heart of northern Manitoba, accessible only by floatplane. That remoteness is the single biggest factor in why the pike fishing here is so consistently exceptional. There's no road access, no weekend boat traffic, and no fishing pressure from casual anglers. The pike population at Munroe Lake is healthy, abundant, and aggressive.
Our waters are part of the Canadian Shield — crystal-clear, cold, and rich with forage. These are ideal conditions for pike to grow long and heavy. We've had guests land pike over 50 inches at the lodge, and mid-40-inch fish are a regular occurrence throughout the season. The Manitoba Master Angler qualifying length for northern pike is 41 inches — our guests blow past that mark consistently.
Best Times and Techniques for Pike at MLL

Pike fishing at Munroe Lake is productive from the moment the season opens in mid-June right through to late August, but there are some patterns worth knowing.
Early Season (Mid-June to Early July)
This is prime time for pike. The fish are still shallow after the spring spawn, cruising through weed beds, rocky shorelines, and the mouths of creek inflows. Spoons, spinnerbaits, and topwater lures are deadly during this window. Fish the 2-8 foot range along weed edges and expect heart-stopping strikes all day long.
Mid-Season (July)
As the water warms, pike relate to deeper weed edges, drop-offs, and submerged rock structure. This is when large jerkbaits and swimbaits become incredibly effective. Pike will still hammer topwater in the mornings and evenings — there's nothing like watching a big northern pike explode on a surface lure.
Late Season (August)
Pike begin feeding aggressively again as water temperatures cool and daylight shortens. This is often when the biggest fish of the year are caught. Focus on main-lake weed beds, points, and deeper bays. Large soft plastics, bucktail spinners, and trolling big crankbaits can produce outstanding results.
The Shore Lunch Experience

No fishing trip at Munroe Lake Lodge is complete without a shore lunch. Our guides prepare fresh fillets right on the shore — golden, crispy, and cooked within hours of being caught. It's one of the highlights of every trip and something our guests talk about for years. There's nothing quite like sitting on a granite shoreline in the middle of nowhere, eating the freshest fish you've ever tasted.
Conservation and Catch-and-Release
We take the health of our pike fishery seriously. Northern pike are apex predators and essential to the lake's ecosystem. We strongly encourage catch-and-release for all pike — especially those trophy-class fish over 40 inches. Barbless hooks are encouraged, and our guides are trained in proper fish handling to maximize survival rates. Using jaw spreaders and long-nose pliers for safe hook removal is standard practice at Munroe Lake Lodge. This approach is why our fishing remains world-class year after year.
What to Bring for Pike Fishing

If you're planning a pike trip to Munroe Lake Lodge, here's what we recommend:
A medium-heavy to heavy-action casting or spinning rod in the 7' to 7'6" range is ideal. Pair it with a quality reel spooled with 30-50 lb braided line and a wire or heavy fluorocarbon leader — pike have razor-sharp teeth and will cut through anything less. Bring a selection of spoons, large spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, swimbaits, and topwater plugs. A good jaw spreader and long-nose pliers are essential. Our lodge store also carries tackle if you need to supplement.
